Our CULTURE
LETTER FROM PRESIDENT & CEO Greg Crabb
In 2022, we continued our efforts within our company, communities, and industry. Amerisure’s employee DEI Ambassador group continues to bring focus on providing an inclusive experience for all employees through learning and discussion opportunities, including our quarterly Days of Understanding. We continue to enhance our partnerships with various industry groups including the National African-American Insurance Association, Rising Insurance Star Executives (RISE) DEI Committee, and Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers’ Diversity Council, among others. We’ve also created a diverse agency group – Impact Partners – focused on our mutual success.
Community is also a strong element of our culture, and the Amerisure Charitable Foundation (ACF) is a primary way we organize our community outreach efforts. In addition to financially supporting dozens of charities throughout the states in which we live and work, our employees also came together to support these organizations, donating hundreds of hours of service. We worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan to continue to deliver a Risk Management and Data Analytics club which exposed youth to a career in our industry. Another important outreach continues to be The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, with whom we have been involved for over a decade. Our employees are actively engaged with this organization, and we are inspired by the work they do with patients and their families. Recognizing the strategic alignment between the center’s work and our commitment to rehabilitating injured workers, in 2022 the Amerisure Charitable Foundation made a multi-year pledge totaling $500,000 to support Shepherd Center.

CAPABILITIES & OFFERINGS
Amerisure Programs (AMP) is operated by a team of experts who leverage
select agency partnerships to analyze risk and design competitive coverages
for businesses with homogeneous risk. In 2022, AMP wrote $22 million in
written premium in connection with our gas and welding, security and alarm
installation, tow operators, and condominium association programs.
Notable to 2022 was the official launch of AMP’s condominium association program, which booked more than $7 million in its first year through a Managing General Agent (MGA) partnership with Arden Insurance Services, LLC. AMP also launched an equipment rental program at the end of 2022, in collaboration with AssuredPartners of Illinois, LLC, to help policyholders secure their company’s physical assets with custom coverage.
These new and unique coverage options, targeted to exposures that are typically more difficult to place, will help further enhance our opportunities for mutual success together with our agency partners.

Amerisure Programs Delivers on New Capabilities
Protecting businesses within the construction industry has been one of Amerisure’s greatest strengths for 110 years. To broaden our expertise and capabilities in this market, we formed a Surety division.
In 2022, Amerisure Surety officially began offering its products and focused on highly valued exclusivity, agency-driven processes, and superior service. The experienced surety leadership team has identified and appointed over 25 partner agencies and is excited to selectively involve additional agents who are dedicated to offering these products with a consultative approach. The team hosted in-person events to collaborate with agency customers across U.S. cities and exceeded internal premium goals by 190%.
Amerisure Surety Achieves Strong First Year
With over $40 million in new business for the second year in a row, our Special Risk (SR) team continued to deliver loss sensitive programs that provided a competitive edge to our agency partners in 2022. These results were achieved by leveraging competitive collateral requirements, flexible loss funding solutions, and by providing several producer workshops to help agency partners learn about our unique service value proposition and programs as well as how to identify loss sensitive prospects.
SureBuilt Captive
The team officially launched SureBuilt, a group captive program with agency partner Marsh McLennan. Surebuilt offers several exclusive benefits, including selectivity of members, inclusiveness of agency relationships, transparency, coverage consistency, and umbrella capacity. The captive has proven to be a highly profitable growth initiative, with more than $6 million in premium written and 10 accounts.
Expertise
The Special Risk team devoted time and resources to further develop its expert
employees in 2022, providing APEX learning management system courses
and Special Risk in-person training facilitations. Four Amerisure underwriters
received designations through the Special Risk certification program.
Special Risk Experiences Continued Profitable Growth
Through a rigorous nomination and selection process, Amerisure’s annual Champions program rewards employees who perform at a high level, demonstrate expertise, show a commitment to an industry-leading experience and live Amerisure’s values in all they do. This special acknowledgement has been part of our culture for decades and reinforces the instrumental role our people play in the company’s success.
Our 2021 Champions were recognized in 2022 for their outstanding contributions and enjoyed an exclusive trip to Nashville, Tennessee, to network and experience the city’s unique music, food and event offerings.
Champions Recognition Program
Amerisure Agency Services facilitates training and business solutions that accelerate the operational performance of our partner agencies. Programs and solutions include strategic planning, operational support, and training programs for producer, account manager, and leadership development.
In 2022, the Agency Services team delivered training to more than 180 producers, supported multiple strategic and operational planning agency engagements, and developed an eleven-week training program for agency account managers to support the evolving needs of our agency customers.
Agency Services
Our One Amerisure service model was developed to deliver a unique value to our agency customers and a consistent, personalized experience for our policyholders.
Amerisure announced and launched this refreshed service value proposition in 2021, and in 2022 our service teams continued to put the model into action with meaningful service coordination, personal communication with clear points of contact, transparency throughout the insurance experience, and actionable customer insights.
As a result of the One Amerisure approach, communication, collaboration, service, timeliness, and ease of doing business were frequently named as the most impactful factors agents and policyholders valued most about their experience with Amerisure (NPS survey, October 2022).
One Amerisure – Our Service Difference
Our risk management team collaborates with agency customers and policyholders to analyze business risks and deliver customized and innovative safety solutions. As part of this focus, in 2022 the team led more than 400 in-person policyholder activities, including construction leadership workshops, OSHA 10-hour trainings, and jobsite and hazard analyses.
Through partnerships with cutting-edge technology companies, the team continued to pilot and launch programs exclusive to Amerisure policyholders, providing added hazard controls and reducing risk. New solutions launched and expanded in 2022 included wearable ergonomic exoskeletons, virtual reality training, forklift backup cameras, and enhanced fleet telematics. In addition, Amerisure’s usage-based insurance program, of which 1,440 vehicles across the U.S. are participating, monitors driver behaviors to identify risk and enhance safety and offers an insurance discount and performance credit based on year-over-year fleet safety improvement.
The risk management team showcased its subject matter expertise to policyholders and agencies by hosting several educational webinars on topics such as optimal driver selection and how to implement a virtual reality training program. Also available for the second year, and a one-of-a-kind product, policyholders can submit safety-related questions to these experts via Amerisure’s “WebRM” digital platform.

Amerisure’s balance sheet remains strong and conservative. The asset base is nearing $3.2 billion and includes a high quality and diversified investment portfolio of $2.6 billion. We maintain the strongest level of risk-adjusted capitalization as measured by AM Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), which scores Amerisure at the 99.6% level. Our leverage ratio remains in a strong position while premiums grew to a company high and surplus declined due to unrealized market losses.
BALANCE SHEET STRENGTH
As a mutual insurance organization, Amerisure is committed to long-term surplus growth for the benefit of our employees, agency partners and policyholders. Investment market volatility reduced surplus across the industry and impacted Amerisure as surplus declined in 2022. Despite the challenging investment market in 2022, surplus has grown nearly $105 million since 2018. Surplus of $1.1 billion ranks within the top 10% of the P&C industry.
SURPLUS
Investment yields improved throughout the year as interest rates rose in 2022. Net investment income was $85.3 million outperforming plan by $8 million. Strong investment income pushed our investment ratio a half point better than plan, resulting in an operating ratio of 94.1%. On a normalized basis the operating ratio was 92.1%. Amerisure produced net income of $29 million.
OPERATING RESULTS
Premium grew by 13.6% to a company high of $874.0 million which was $58 million favorable to plan and up $104.5 million over 2021. This includes $119.4 million of new business, our highest since 2009. Our core business wrote $100.5 million of new business with Amerisure Program business contributing an additional $13.1 million. The launch of Amerisure Surety in 2022 added an additional $5.8 million, exceeding its first-year plan by $2.8 million.
The calendar year combined ratio of 104.7% is a deterioration over prior year; however, excluding a large condo claim (1 point) and investment in core system technology (1 point), resulted in a normalized combined ratio of 102.7%. The calendar year results show neutral prior year reserve development.
The accident year combined ratio was 104.7%. The accident year loss and allocated loss adjustment expense ratio deteriorated slightly over prior year due to an increase in our Commercial Auto loss ratio. Workers’ Compensation remained the largest line of business and produced an accident year net loss and allocated loss adjustment expense ratio around 61%, outperforming all other lines.
UNDERWRITING RESULTS
Even in a volatile market, Amerisure remains financially strong and has seen continued success as a result of the strength of its agency partnerships, proven expertise of its employees, and a dedication to industry-leading service. I am proud and appreciative of my time as chair of the board and confident the organization will continue to deliver on its 110-year reputation for service excellence.

Throughout our company’s 110 years, Amerisure has pioneered workplace safety solutions and demonstrated industry-leading customer service. Our culture, standards of excellence, and focus on mutual success have been made possible by the expertise and dedication of our talented teams.
Amerisure, originally known as the Michigan Workmen's Compensation Mutual Insurance Company, began just 11 days after the Michigan Workman’s Compensation law went into effect in 1912. From the revolutionary use of an industrial safety laboratory, to operating the first hospital for recuperating workers, over the decades we have upheld our mission to help protect businesses and their workers through customized coverage and the highest quality standards that help reduce risk and ensure safety.
When banks were closed during the Great Depression, Amerisure continued to honor claims and provided employee paychecks directly from its corporate vaults. By pursuing technology and innovation in 1957 with the installation of an IBM 650, and honoring employees with extra Appreciation Days as early as the 1970s, we have always prioritized service for employees, agency partners and policyholders.
In 1984, the organization changed its name to the Amerisure Companies and created a network of independent agencies, leading to the Partners For Success® program. The program was formalized in 1997 and has led to decades of mutual success with our valued agency customers.
Today, the Amerisure team continues to demonstrate its foundation of industry-leading service excellence. The company’s expert employees are recognized annually for exceptional service and innovation, and in 2022 we were awarded nationally for our continued agility and culture.
110 Years of Exceptional Service – Made Possible by Our People
We strive to cultivate an inclusive workplace that is open and receptive to innovative ideas, leverages diverse backgrounds and experiences, and fosters collaboration and creativity to drive superior business outcomes. This continued focus on creating an environment where employees can feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work was reflected in our 2022 employee engagement survey, where nearly 50% of the combined open-ended feedback regarding the factors our employees liked most about working at Amerisure was related to:
DEI Ambassador Program
Amerisure established its DEI Ambassador program in 2019, and in 2022 the group continued to collaborate with internal and external leaders to formulate activities for fostering a more diverse and inclusive work environment. The DEI Ambassadors hosted “Days of Understanding” dedicated to sharing resources on the importance of belonging, and employees engaged in thought-provoking discussions related to books, movies, and music. Each month, the company shared information on worldwide cultural celebrations.
A panel discussion was co-sponsored with the law firm Kopka Pinkus Dolin to recognize and celebrate Juneteenth.
Two DEI Ambassadors also attended the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) Annual Conference and Empowerment Summit in Baltimore to recognize the contributions and achievements of African Americans in insurance and engage in discussions related to professional growth, leadership, change, and ways to make an impact in the industry as an individual and as part of the company.

Amerisure’s claims team is dedicated to superior service and a consistent, connected and seamless customer experience that truly differentiates Amerisure from other carriers.
Enhancements & Technology
The claims team implemented improvements to processes that benefit policyholders and agency partners in 2022, including the upgrade of our core claims system and moving it to the cloud through our relationship with Guidewire and the expansion of the Major Case Unit for the most complex claims.
With a continued focus on ease of doing business with Amerisure, 72% of all claim payments were issued through our digital payment platform. The team also exchanged more than 50,000 text messages with claimants to address questions and provide status updates in real time.
Claims Experience Organization
The Claims Experience Organization (CXO) serves our portfolio of customers and policyholders by facilitating connections, solving problems, providing data insights, and supporting the delivery of a consistent claims experience. In 2022, the CXO instituted welcome kits to onboard new policyholders; enhanced access to claims data and analytics to support improving the policyholder loss experience; streamlined the claim review process; and hosted 15 policyholder training sessions.
Claims
The Amerisure marketing team collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop sales, advertising and communications tools that help to inform and educate agency customers, policyholders and employees on Amerisure’s products, services and operational capabilities.
In 2022, the team launched a refreshed company website at Amerisure.com. The redesigned experience allows prospective policyholders to research Amerisure in new and more efficient and effective ways, engaging with the brand’s solutions and services and ultimately driving business to our agency customers.
The Marketing team also evolved the company’s sales collateral library to more effectively support our agency customers when discussing Amerisure’s differentiators with policyholders.
Marketing
We are committed to continuing our journey of agility with the development of digital services and solutions that provide an exceptional experience for agency customers, policyholders and employees.
As part of this ongoing investment, in 2022 we implemented a new customer relationship management sales tool as well as invested in a major core systems upgrade. Amerisure’s legacy policy and billing systems will be replaced with the Guidewire™ cloud-based insurance suite. The new system, along with using Guidewire’s ClaimCenter, will create a more seamless and integrated platform across our core business operations.
This systems upgrade kicked off in 2022 and will continue over a four-year period with phased releases.
Enhancements to our platforms helps us deliver on our One Amerisure service model by focusing our experts through minimizing manual data work and enabling a more accurate, relevant and coordinated service experience for our agency customers and policyholders.

Amerisure is proud to have launched a specialized agency group in 2022, Impact Partners, that focuses on business growth, talent development, and partnerships with minority-owned and led agencies. Impact Partners are committed to growing their business and championing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. The group held its first council meeting in August. This limited-distribution model allows us to establish and nurture strong relationships with each agency and to be a highly responsive, trusted partner. As customers of Amerisure, these agencies have access to customizable benefits and resources to support their business development activities. We provide the specialized products and solutions needed to develop long-term policyholder relationships, grow profitably, and together, achieve mutual success.
110 Years of Powerful Partnerships

INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
Amerisure proudly celebrated our 110th anniversary this year. In a challenging external environment, with bond and equity prices falling together, inflation soaring, and near-record natural catastrophes, Amerisure’s financial strength and stability led the way to another successful year as AM Best again affirmed our “A” Stable rating while our premium grew by a healthy 13.6%. Our focus on being an industry-leading specialist transforming the insurance experience one partnership at a time resonated loudly with our agents, policyholders, and employees.
Our commitment to deliver industry-leading service and build powerful partnerships with our customers continues to define us. Our culture is built upon these core attributes and they are delivered collaboratively and with agility to match each customer’s needs. Building and nurturing the powerful partnerships that drive mutual success is at the heart of our business.
There are many ways to measure success, and one of the most important is certainly our Net Promoter Score (NPS). Our policyholders rated us an 84 in 2022 which is approximately double the insurance industry average. This puts us on par or above some of the brands best known for service and customer loyalty like Apple, Costco, and Nordstrom. This is a true reflection of our entire organization’s passion for service excellence.
We recognize that it is our employees who deliver the service experiences and build the relationships that differentiate us in the marketplace. We understand that our culture forms the bedrock for these outcomes and that it needs to be supportive of allowing our employees to make the right decisions. We want to hear from our employees to ensure we are providing them with the right environment to deliver on our promises and are humbled by some of the awards we won last year, including Best and Brightest Companies to Work For® in the Nation, Best Places to Work in Insurance, and Computerworld – Best Places to Work in IT.
We are proud of these awards and even more so of our employees who deliver our results day in and day out.
Success is never achieved by standing still. In 2022, we took big steps to ensure our ability to support our policyholders, agents and employees into the future.
We introduced a new Surety solution to further augment our construction expertise. Our Surety team started writing bonds in the first half of 2022 with a select group of agencies. The team did great work preparing for the launch and our agencies responded. I’m excited to report that we exceeded our goal for 2022 and anticipate far outpacing our original estimates for 2023.
We added two new products to our manufacturing solution – product recall along with manufacturers E&O – and began to see new business pick up in the second half of the year. We also supplemented the team with additional property underwriting expertise.
Our Programs unit had another strong year, doubling their premium while also outperforming on the bottom line. Their reputation continues to grow in the marketplace with two new programs underway.
We activated our first group captive. Working closely with one of our agencies, we collaboratively developed a solution for select policyholders which allows them to share in the risks and the rewards of their collective loss experience. This required some significant shifts and is a great example of achieving mutual success with both partner agencies and policyholders.
Lastly, while we will never lose sight of the value our people bring to our relationships, we continue to make significant enhancements to our digital capabilities. Our efforts were recognized in 2022 by another Aite-Novarica Innovation award as well as a Celent Model Insurer award. We also launched a multi-year initiative to modernize our policy and billing systems. These systems are critical to meeting the evolving needs of our policyholders and to realize much greater efficiency with our agencies. The first new system capabilities are scheduled for delivery in 2023.
SOLID PERFORMANce
While we overachieved our premium plan with growth of 13.6%, we also contended with significant market volatility as well as economic and social inflation much like the rest of the insurance industry. We felt the impact in several ways, including a reduction in net income from $72 million in 2021 to $29 million in 2022 as well as a decline in surplus for the first time since the financial crisis in 2008. Nevertheless, our balance sheet remains strong with surplus in excess of $1 billion and a very healthy premium to surplus leverage ratio of 0.76 to 1. Our balance sheet is debt free.
Our accident year and calendar year combined ratios both came in at 104.7, which was slightly higher than plan, but we would have achieved plan if they are normalized for additional technology investments as well as a unique liability claim.
As we reflect back on 2022, our financial strength combined with our operational momentum has positioned us well at year end for a successful 2023. We look forward to a year of mutual success driven by our powerful partnerships with our customers.

Fully Integrated Technology Systems: Key Benefits
Our goal is to deliver unparalleled service to our agency customers and policyholders. Utilizing Customer Satisfaction and Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys, Amerisure is able to continuously gauge how well we perform in the market and determine areas of strength in service as well as where we can improve.
Amerisure’s approach in reaching our customers how, when, and where they prefer reinforces our partnership focus.
Our 2022 aggregate policyholder NPS of 84 encompasses results from more than 2,500 surveys and has remained above the industry average since 2017. Amerisure’s results in risk management and claims — 85 and 84 respectively — remain nearly double the carrier average.
We use the results of our agency surveys to better understand our customers’ needs and their expectations — and how we can continue to best deliver on our service promise. Our 2022 agency satisfaction scores placed Amerisure above the industry average and reinforce our focus on maintaining powerful connections.

Supporting the Manufacturing Industry
Amerisure has been helping to protect America’s workers for 110 years — and as one of our longstanding specialties, manufacturing is an important part of our history. As the sector continues to see growth in the U.S., our renewed focus in manufacturing in 2022 supported these opportunities.
We expanded our manufacturing capabilities by evolving our underwriting and risk capacity and preferences (our target appetite), as well as the official launch of product recall
and manufacturers errors and omissions products.
We created informational collateral to reflect our
key differentiators in the marketplace, and our
field marketing & underwriting teams participated
in a manufacturing-focused workshop in Florida
to grow their expertise in identifying
manufacturing risks and opportunities.
These enhancements position us to write quality manufacturing risks with expertise and enthusiasm, and we are excited to bring enhanced manufacturing capabilities to our agency customers.
